Yesterday was the 4 month anniversary, or thereabouts, of me mashing my finger with my lathe while working on a bladeholder for nartules.
Here is the new pic.
The Lunula is irregular and the nail on the "left side" still has a way to go before it reaches the correct length and stops separating.
I have some noticeable loss of sensation in the fingertip. I have trouble picking up little things like 4-40 nuts and the like with that index finger. I don't know if that nerve damage will eventually recover or not.
I guess its better than losing the fingertip, which is what would have happened on a bigger lathe, like the new 14x40 that D.E. recently installed.
you obviously weren't wearing your PPE (personal protection equipment)
Actually, with some things wearing gloves can be a much larger danger. Especially with things that go round and round. Getting your clothing or gloves caught in something can results in loosing limbs or life. Better loose a finger, or finger nail.
Problem being around machinery a lot you get relaxed or tired, leaving you prone to mistakes.

I wont wear gloves around anything that rotates. Saw a guy lose his arm and when his gloves (which he was told not to wear) got stuck in a industrial router (i think thats the term). Glove got stuck and pulled him forward and then his rolled up shirtleeve got stuck. Machine stopped when it struck his shoulder blade. This was at a custom and wholesale furniture warehouse.
A turniqet/bag of ice and two guys holding him inverted until the ambulance saved his life.
what to learn: be careful with powerful machines! i often catch myself doing stupid things, aswell... but i guess we have to feel the pain (or to be surprised of the blood spots) to actually learn something!
