Here is another build by Vektor and I. As usual, everything is from scratch, Vektor did all the machining and emitter locking system, and I completed the hilt with 3D printed parts and the electronic install. It’s not the first Kanan made by Vektor btw, so you might already be familiar with it (previous version) There will be a few more of these coming later ^^
- Custom hilt with blade holder disconnect system, like in the series SW Rebels (~17 scratch machined parts) – 4 pole 3.5mm jack plugs for the disconnect system - 3D printed and painted activation box, pommel ring and grips – Tri-Cree XP-E2 BBW main Led - 3D printed chassis / sled – Nano Biscotte 2 + PEX soundboard (blue main, white FOC) – Removable single 18650 Cell – 2W Bass Speaker – Custom blade plug – 7/8? blade
This turned out fantastic, awesome work with finish & install Darth Ryô! I'm also liking the chassis very much.
I must stress out that the hilt left my 'shop practically in just raw parts, DR did most of the assembling & finishing (with 3D printed accents). Also, the install in this hilt isn't on the "Easy" side of the scale either.
Vektor Come one bud, I don't recall seeing any raw parts when I received it Just crafting the locking mechanism, can't call that "easy" either huh? And don't minimize the design part you did ^^ Kudos to you mate!
stl Might be a matter of preferences really, but I find PET (the ColorFab XT that I use) stronger than ABS, and "easier" to print. I actually printed the grips on this saber in black ABS, cause they got a nice rubber feel after sanding. But for the rest (chassis, control box and pommel ring), I find PET better, especially in term of preparation before painting, or regarding the fact I needed the strongest material for the chassis and its removable battery.
Anyway, I just received black PET for my next chassis, looks already good without post-printing work:

Ced - I really like that chassis layout. Using the TCSS 18650 battery holder built into your Shapeways chassis gives you the best of both worlds (removable battery and custom chassis for the win). And the slide switches on the Kanan (for power and sound) are something I'm planning on my own builds, but I've never seen it done in such an integrated fashion. Great job.

Thanks again! It's all about design really, if I'd used one of my Shapeways chassis on my own printer, the result would be awful (cause it's different printing technology). So I have to design these "home printed" chassis in a way to minimize the post-printing rework (removing supports, sanding, ...) and still look cool But I can't add these to Shapeways directly "as is"... too much material would be used and it would cost too much. So shadycanuck, I'll work on adding the removable battery setup to Shapeways soon, but I have to design them first ^^

Oh and the pics above, that's another version that I printed on my home Ultimaker 2 printer, with black PET plastic, not from Shapeways. The black on Shapeways should be fine, but sometimes they are bad surprises with this material => black powder not sticking well on the white printed model (but shapeways replace any failed print anyway). I prefer the other colors that shapeways do, especially the red
