The times I've trooped at children's hospitals the biggest thing you can give is your time and a hug. Kids really like the attention the most. That's what this mission was always about for me. It's a way we can encourage this family. My saber idea was to give them a lasting token to always remind them they're not alone and that some cared enough to go to the trouble to brighten their day. I wasn't sure if we'd get one saber together let alone two.
I'm open to any and all suggestions. Right now the goal is for me to travel down to their home the week of Rogue One. If anyone wants to include anything else you can pm me and I'll give you my address. I think the first thing we need to work on is covering part of the Frog saber donated by scarecrow. I don't want him footing the entire bill.
I haven't read all of the post here but are we trying to get the Father a saber too? If so I have most items in stock to make a saber for him. I even have a Graflex 2.0 kit. Just let me know if you want to try to do that and I will get started building it.
Thanks man. The mom really liked the yoda idea so I think we should move in that direction. It just seems fitting. Anything more than a yoda saber is an added bonus.

I only live 45 minutes from Atlanta and actually work in downtown Atlanta. Let me know if you need someone to pick you up at the airport or need someone to take pics and video or just want a fellow IRA member to meet you there. This story really hit me hard and I want to help however I can.

This all happening really fast. To make the rogue deadline week we're going to use the Frog Saber and donations to help drefray costs. Saberconcepts will be in line for saber number 2 if you guys want to do that and if there's enough interest. The Frog saber was approx $750 in parts.
I don't want anyone to be overburdened by this. I'm putting $100 towards the Frog and covering costs to deliver the saber. Anything above the Frog is up to you guys and over the top.
Personally I think the Frog would be enough. Maybe a small check to help with medical bills if we have extra. But the ski's the limit. It's up to what you all contribute over the next week.

Let me make sure I can get the Graflex 2 completed this weekend. I have all the materials and parts in stock except for a 7/8" blade. I will post progress of the saber after this weekend. I know that having something like this happen to your family is completely devastating and that even the smallest gestures, especially from people you don't even know, can make a huge difference.

Here are the parts I have on hand and am using for the Graflex 2. This was going to be my personal saber but I think this is a much better home for it. I am using a Spark 2 since it can operate with a single switch solution. I am using the red button for the switch. It has a spring under the red cap and works great to operate a tactile switch underneath it.

Ok the first saber will be the Yoda Frog saber donated by scarecrow. We're topping donations for this saber at $750. Please either post here or pm me with your donation amount so I can monitor the progress. Once we reach our cap I I'll direct funds to saberconcept's Graflex 2.0. Saber. Should we exceed both sabers costs all remaining funds will be directed to the family to help cover medical expenses.
I've got an overwhelming response to this and we should get a good turnout from both the RL and 501st.
The Frog is covered. I'm shipping it with the blade, 2 sets of new batteries, chargers for 3.6v (included batteries) and 3.0v batteries (easy to find) and a 7.4v in hilt charger. I'll send the artwork with it, too. I'll make an instruction video for Luke and the parents when I get back on Monday and I'll load that awesome boot. Thanks Blako, you rock! Thanks again to Luke for making this happen and to you all for caring. We are the BEST FORUM EVER!

The Graflex 2.0 build is covered too. All funds that were going to be directed my way should go to the family. If anyone wants to replace the Graflex 2.0 I used later on down the road that will be fine. But for now, I want to concentrate on the brave little kid and the family. I am also sending one of my USB Smart Battery Chargers for the 3.7V battery in the saber.

I have access to a large amount of sheet steel and a CNC plasma cutter, among other equipment. I would like to make a stand that would hold both sabers together, be SW themed, and impart a message of love. Also free of charge. No donations needed. I'm short on cash so this can be my main contribution.
scarecrow and saberconcepts, send me the dimensions of the sabers via PM and I will get cracking away on it. I will ship the stand to Luke once completed and will handle all shipping costs.

It is hardly generous compared to two incredible people who are willing to donate complete (and expensive) lightsaber hilts to complete strangers just because they have love in their hearts and decided to think of others instead of themselves. I am humbled and PROUD to be a part of this amazing community.
In all honesty I didn't want to take donations. To me it negates the sentiment behind the gesture. The only reason I agreed was Luke wanted this to be from all of us and not just me and him. Many thanks to all who've donated. I'm lowering the cap and I'll send the rest to saberconcepts and the family. I wish I could be there when stormtroopers show up at his door. I get giddy just thinking about it. I want you all to know that your kindness and generosity have made this my best Christmas ever. You're the reason I love this forum.

I'm greatful for everyone's generosity. Every little bit counts and it will all help to make this a memorable event. I'm blown away that scarecrow and saberconcepts have both donated complete sabers. Thank you guys. But I also know that there are many of us that want to participate as well. This forum has always been about working together. Donations will allow everyone to play whatever part they choose.
The response is way more than I ever expected and I know this will really cheer this family up. I know the doctors said Grayson has a terminal illness. I'm not aware how much or how little time he may have.

This is why the IRA is the best lightsaber forum out there to me. In a little over a day this awesome kid and his dad are getting something that they can use to enjoy what time is left. Every time I go to a Childrens hospital for a troop of just to visit, I am always amazed at how hard these kids fight, how brave they are and how they show me what true strength is. I always end up walking out with a huge smile on my face but feeling completely humbled at the courage and strength I just witnessed. I want to thank Luke Skywalker for showing true compassion for this amazing kid by starting this thread.
The strange thing is that before I saw this thread, I had just actually unpacked the Graflex 2.0 from storage. I have had it packed up for over 6 months and have not thought about it until now. I took this as a sign that the saber was meant for that family.
Just sent a small donation for the family, scarecrow. I forgot that when you do the friends&family option, it doesn't provide any info, so I think it just went over anonymous. Which is fine, it's all going to the right place.

I am almost done with building the saber. It should be completed by the end of this weekend and all that it would need after that is the new fonts to put in the Spark 2 soundboard I used. I will post some pics and video when it is complete. I want to thank everyone here for all of their donations, prayers and good wishes for the family. This is the best forum ever!!
profezzorn: hey ARKM, did you ever write a that tutorial on the toner transfer method?
Jun 23, 2017 15:50:15 GMT -5
ARKM: *waves hand* "I'm not the slacker you're looking for"
Jun 23, 2017 16:24:16 GMT -5
ARKM: Sadly no. Well, that's not entirely true. I did finish writing it but did not perform the steps and take pics of said steps.
Jun 23, 2017 16:26:30 GMT -5
ARKM: So it's like "Step 5: Using the high temperature temp, tape the paper with the design on it onto the metal part to be etched."
Jun 23, 2017 16:26:53 GMT -5
ARKM: ... but there's no Pic 4.
Jun 23, 2017 16:27:10 GMT -5
profezzorn: from other things I've read it's just PNP blue with some heat and pressure applied, right?
Jun 23, 2017 16:37:26 GMT -5
ARKM: Some use that. I could not get successful results with it but others have.
Jun 23, 2017 16:47:16 GMT -5
profezzorn: so what do you use?
Jun 23, 2017 16:47:36 GMT -5
ARKM: I personally use glossy magazine pages. I just rip a page out of a magazine and put it in the printer. The pages have to be the right thickness for the printer though. Too thin and they rip in the printer.
